Harvest Time

The garden has grown up over the last two months and is now producing huge quantities of vegetables. I have hardly been able to keep up with the collards and cucumbers and it's looking like the delicata squash will be taking over the house soon. The heat of the summer helped push the peppers into hyper-speed and the cooler nights have allowed the broccoli to finally begin making their heads. Green beans are hanging from the trellises and eggplant are finally turning into long luscious fruits from the bright purple flowers from which they started life. I put it some fall crops including another seeding of carrots, sweet peas, spinach, and another row of broccoli. This grand experiment has turned into a bountiful harvest and I have learned so much. Each day brings new wisdom as I attempt to conquer tomato end rot, fungus, squash bugs, and something that continues to cut the plants at their base (the most disappointing bug of all...). Here are some pictures to illustrate the great growth of the last many weeks:

A young cantaloupe almost big enough to eat!

Two delicata squashes taking over the garden!

Green beans galore!

The Cucumber Kingdom is populated by a healthy crew of long, robust creatures which have also taken over the vegetable drawer of the fridge and the countertop!

A bee, drunk with pollen, enjoying a local squash blossom.

Collards continue to give me a run for my money...definitely a good crop to plant in one's garden, delicious, nutritious and hardy. I froze several pounds to eat this winter when the snow covers them up.

Finally...broccoli!

The bed is now full of big blooms, leaves, and fruit!

The first batch of baby carrots, taken out to thin the crop and make room for the big guys coming later this year...

The first caprese salad of the summer (eaten weeks ago) with fresh tomatoes and basil from the garden...that is what summer tastes like!
